Studies in Global Film History: South Asian Women Filmmakers - 22743 - FST 375 - 001
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F)

Pre- or co-requisite: FST 205

This course will introduce students to South Asian women filmmakers working within national and transnational contexts. On the one hand, the course will center on filmmakers located within the Indian subcontinent making films within a range of modes varying from the industrial-popular (Farah Khan and Zoya Akhtar) to the independent art (Sai Paranjpye and Aparna Sen) to interrogate their influence on the history of Indian cinemas. Conversely, the course will foreground diasporic South Asian filmmakers such as Mira Nair, Gurinder Chadha, and Deepa Mehta, located in the global metropolises of New York, London, and Toronto. These latter cineastes work in diverse geographical and cultural contexts, working with a transnational cast and crew and leaning upon global marketing and distribution of their films. As a result, the course will showcase films from various historical periods, languages, and geographies. However, the unifying theme of the course within these different sites of film practice will remain works that showcase South Asian women's subjectivities and foreground their interior worlds.
