Introduction to Film Study - 22713 - FST 200 - 001 |
---|
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F) Designed to prepare students to major in Film Studies, FST 200 teaches students how to analyze cinema as an artform. We will study the main elements of film style: mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound. Students will then learn how sounds and moving images structure a film and render a narrative. Along the way, students will develop writing skills, analytic skills, and technical knowledge applicable to film study. The films we study represent diverse styles, periods, genres, national cinemas, and production modes in order to give students an understanding of the wide range of cinema’s artistic possibilities. Throughout, we will investigate movies as movies—artistic works designed to stimulate rewarding experiences. Wherever we are, we will never stray far from our central question: What is it about the movies people enjoy that makes people enjoy them?
