Concepts in Film: DIY Filmmaking - 22573 - FST 110 - 007
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F) What is cinema, and how do you start making it? How can you express yourself and your feelings? Where do you begin, and how do you keep growing? In this course we will explore these questions and many more, as students become filmmakers themselves. Since digital tools ranging from cheap cameras to smartphones are readily available, anyone may become a cinema or media artist who takes the time to shoot something and post their work on-line. This class will question the divide between professionalism and amateurism by encouraging students to make serious and thoughtful (or funny and thoughtful) work with limited resources. Concepts in Film: Identity and Representation in Horror Cinema - 22581 - FST 110 - 010
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F) This class will ultimately evaluate and analyze horror since the abandonment of the Hayes Code starting specifically with The Exorcist. We will ultimately look at how cultural anxieties of various errors dictate and directly relate to the production of horror. We will watch genre-defining films from each decade leading up to 2025 to ultimately analyze identity and representation in these films. Horror studies offers a unique pathway to analyze and discuss personal and communal struggles, fears, and anxieties. Ultimately, we will be looking at depictions of gender, sexuality, race, class, and disability in these films to analyze the conversation regarding identity in relation to the cultural zeitgeist of the decade the films were released. We will chart how films contribute to the overall discussion of identity and representation as a whole.
